Zip Tie Studded Tires
With winter coming we often get questions about studded tires which are available in many different sizes starting at $50.00 ea. For some winter time commuters the thought of shelling out $100 or more for a pair of tires is just not feasable and a much more economical means of traction is needed.
For this tech tip to work the bike must either have coaster brakes or disc brakes (no caliper or V-brakes). With the tire inflated to your desired pressure (usually on the lower side of the recomended range for snow or icy conditions) simply run a zip tie around the rim and tire and pull until snug, so as to have it tight enough to stay in place but not so tight as to deform the tire. For max traction place the zip tie with the toothed side facing out. Make sure the connecting end of the zip tie sits on the rim in between the spokes and not somewhere on the tread of the tire where it will cause an annoying bump every rotation. Clip off the remainder of the zip tie flush with the end. You can use as few or many zip ties as you like, I suggest starting with every other space between the spokes. Excessive pavement riding can cause zip ties to break so you may loose a few, but your new improved braking ability will allow you to be able to stop and grab them so they can be re-used or thrown away. |
